I add cold wax to the color and paint with various kitchen tools. I also paint encaustic which is hot wax and I use a heat gun or blowtorch
The effects are vivid and impressionistic.

As a plein air painter I travel frequently to some of our most outstanding landscapes here in the west. Attending Plein air paintouts and conventions also allows me to get to so many different places. I am based in Arizona and show my work in both Gold Canyon where I live and in Sedona.
During the warmer months I will retreat to the studio and paint larger paintings from my many photos. I prefer using my own photos as I have been there and have absorbed the atmosphere of the place.
I do also paint custom requests from clients photos if I haven't been there onsite.

Storm Rising off Pickett Butte
I visited the local arboretum that sits below the imposing Pickett Post Butte near Superior, Arizona. And I caught the sun just peeking through the clouds rising off the butte. I took photos to capture the moment for a studio painting using a roller, sponges, bowl scraper.

I painted this plein air on Arizons paint day. We go somewhere on the one day and paint and exhibit for a month. The tourists were looking`out at the 7 cataracts at this turnout. I looked up! I was at 7000 ft and it was cold!

Stone Goblins of Devils Garden
The area around Escalante has the most fascinating collection of stone formations, all part of the Grand Staircase, Utah. We attend a paintout annually and are never short of something to paint even if it is weird. While painting them, it seems they were talking to me! Hence the name of Devil's Garden? they are still looking...right?

My favorite spot to paint in the lakes district of NZ. My farm was 60 miles south. I was a commercial artist while I lived there not a painter! I was there two summers ago on a sunny day. That color of the river is REAL! Glacial flours. A nice momento if you have been there.

Why I use the wax mediums......It's fun! ....and effective
Wax mediums are experiencing renaissance in contemporary painting with their rich texture , luminous finish and versatility. Once an ancient Egyptian and Roman technique, hot and cold wax have evolved into dynamic tools so I can create depth, dimension and durability. It frees me from the limitations of traditional acrylics and oils. No Brushes!
What makes wax so compelling is that it is fun! It has the ability to fuse with pigments, embed materials and create layered almost geological surfaces. Wax offers a tactile experience that gets really immersive. The encaustic or hot wax is created in a hot pottle of pigment and wax. I paint the wax on hot and then fuse it into the layers below with a heat heat or blow torch! Talk about random! You kind of get there but in a pretty casual way.
While most artists tend to go for the really abstract, I prefer to use wax in am impressionistic style in my landscapes. I teach classes all over. I am based in Phoenix AZ but happily leave the heat of the valley to teache elsewhere. I take groups up to 12 students. Contact me if you are interested in learning these fun techniques.
